Common wisdom holds that the time to repair the roof is when the sun is shining. In good times, death and disruption are naturally at the back of our minds. But it is exactly at these moments when we should be spending some time thinking about how we can bring certainty in the tough times that may lie ahead. Planning your Will or creating Lasting Powers of Attorney are two such ways.
Wills
Making your Will and keeping it up to date is very important as it gives you and your family clarity and enables you to direct what happens to your Estate when you pass away. We recommend that you review your Will every five years or after any significant life event.
If you die without a valid Will, it will result in your Estate being distributed in accordance with intestacy laws instead of your specific wishes. It is also extremely important to ensure you have a Will in place if you have children under the age of 18, as a Will can outline who will care for them should the worst happen.
Lasting Powers of Attorney
By the time you actually need to use a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA), it can be too late to make one. Creating LPAs now will enable you to choose the people you trust to help you with your personal and financial affairs.
There are two types of Lasting Power of Attorney which you can have:
- Health and welfare – allows someone else to make decisions in relation to your medical care or living arrangements if you no longer have the mental capacity to do so.
- Property and financial affairs – allows someone to manage your money, pay your bills and look after your property.
“Just because something hasn’t been a problem in the past, doesn’t mean it can’t become one in the future. Act now and you can take the worry out of the situation.”
